The woman with the big heart
This is a story which is taken from my (not yet published) eBook. And here I am using it in the classroom with Valeri, Jan, Ona and Jaume – four great students from Barcelona.
This story is based on the narrative of a music video for DJ Roger Sanchez’s Another Chance. The video was written and directed by Philippe Andre. Click here to see it.
For homework, students had to create a video in which they retell the story and offer an interpretation.
Thanks to all of the great students in the videos and also to Ed Dudley and Billie Haase for support.

Some interesting points. I think the video represents the general societal decline in empathy and how very empathetic people or ”big-hearted” people struggle in societies that place little value on empathy and humanity. This is confirmed by the demand for emotional intelligence and soft skills, which are in decline in a technologically-centred world. Smiling at strangers should not be considered a bad thing, rather we should aim to connect with everyone we meet, even in a small courteous way such as smiling. Also, very interesting that young people in this video think it is strange to ask a stranger out on a date. This video is set in 2001 and meeting people randomly like this was commonplace at that time and so, this view from young people shows just how culture has shifted with technology; meeting people online rather than in person and lacking that personal connection with people that has now been largely replaced with technology and virtual connections. This video demonstrates the struggles of the ”empath” personality also.

Thanks Tara
Incredible that Boldi et al made that video 5 years ago! I wonder what they think now – would be interesting to know if their attitudes have changed.
