Hello there!
Some of you might know this story – I have told it a few times at conferences. It’s a love story with a tragic ending and it’s taken from my new book Videotelling (news about that at the end).
It’s almost as if they were made for each other
Love at first sight
He was going one way
She was going the other
He smiled at her
She smiled back
And that was it
No chance to stop
Neither of them thought
That they would ever meet again
But perhaps this love was meant to be
Because against all odds
Their paths crossed
Not once, not twice, but three more times
They fell in love
He popped the question
She said yes
They tied the knot
And their love went from strength to strength
But then one day, everything changed
A careless little action
A situation beyond their control
And against their will, they were forced apart
Made to go their separate ways
She went on to new things
A new life
A new reason
A new purpose
But not so far away from here
In a forgotten little corner
He lives alone with nothing but memories
Loveless
Homeless
Purposeless
A terrible feeling of emptiness
Sometimes he thinks that life might have been better
If only he had been
Left on the shelf
This month, English Teaching Professional is running a film-making competition. The idea is for students to create a short film in which they bring this story to life.
You can download the instructions on PDF here: Left_on_the_shelf [270kb]
Like all of the videos in my book, Left on the Shelf is based on a short online video. But it is important to remember that the video is much less important than students’ interpretation of the text. For this reason, do not show students the video until they have made their short films.
The original idea was to launch Videotelling at the end of this month (May 2016). But after careful consideration, I have decided to wait until after the summer. It would be a bad idea to launch an educational title just before most teachers stop for their summer holidays.
I’ll keep you informed.
Jamie :)

Thanks, Jamie,
This looks like a great competition. I’m going to go for it with my Elementary class tomorrow as a trial run (most of em leave at the end of the week).

I hope I can do this with some of my PET students. We recently made videos using free online animation software (Zimmer Twins) and I’d never seen them so engaged or motivated before. Thanks for coming up with this fun competition idea!
